Liberal Democrat councillors have joined carers in condemning Sefton Council’s sudden proposal to close Chase Heys Day Centre.
“This announcement has come as a thunderbolt to the service
users, most of whom are elderly and vulnerable,” said councillor Pat Keith. “Chase Heys was
previously being considered by the council for expansion but now we learn they
are to discuss its closure at Sefton Cabinet this week.”
Councillor Nigel Ashton said “ We need to take account of the views of those that use the provision. I believe the voice of the service users and their carers should be heard loud and clear before any decision is reached by the Cabinet.”
“I am amazed that these plans were not being presented to
the Council's Health Scrutiny board in order that elected members can have an
opportunity to study the proposals."
Day visitors to Chase Heys include people with dementia and
Councillor Keith, who is spearheading the campaign to make Southport Dementia
Friendly, added:
“This is very worrying news. People with dementia are
disorientated by change which can lead to distress and further memory loss.
They form secure relationships with familiar staff and environments.
“If this is wrenched
away it can have devastating results.
Any transitions should be handled with in-depth consultation, empathy
and care.”
