Recycling success

Years of campaigning have finally paid off for local residents who want to recycle cardboard and plastic.

The Council have announced that kerbside collection for cardboard and plastics will be introduced in April this year. A survey carried out by pupils at Larkfield Primary School last year found that well over 90% of local parents were in favour of this additional recycling.

Local Liberal Democrat campaigner Jo Barton is delighted. She said: “For ages, Sefton Council refused to consider collecting cardboard and plastic for recycling. Their refusal meant many residents having to take regular loads to the recycling centres themselves by car. This costs money for fuel and adds to CO2 emissions.

"I’m delighted that Sefton has finally seen the light and will be joining Lancashire and other nearby Councils in collecting cardboard and plastics from the kerbside.”

Jo added: “I believe Southport should be leading the way as a ‘Green Town’. Recycling should be at the top of that agenda."

Bin collections over Christmas

Sefton Council have announced the revised wheelie bin and recycling collection dates for the Christmas period. All households will receive a letter with their collection dates.

This year, for the first time, there will be no wheelie bin collections during Christmas week (December 24-28), although there will be a recycling collection during that time. For the first grey wheelie bin collection in the New Year, residents can also leave out up to three black sacks of waste which will be collected.

Bin emptying over Christmas

Please continue to put out your household rubbish and recycling on your normal day over the Christmas period.

From 12^th December 2011 until 13^th January 2012 your grey wheelie bin will be collected weekly on your normal collection day. The green wheelie bin collection service will be suspended for this period.

The weekly green box and blue bag recycling collection service also remains unchanged over Christmas and the New Year.

Local waste recycling beats record

The amount of waste that local households send for recycling has reached a record level.

Latest national figures show that the amount of household waste sent for re-use, recycling or composting in Sefton now stands at just over 42% - the highest on Merseyside.

Cabinet Member Environmental, Cllr Simon Shaw, said: "Once again Sefton residents are top of the local league for recycling."

Don't Waste Your Say

There are now less than two weeks left for residents to have their say on the way that waste collection and disposal is managed across Merseyside.

One of the key objectives is to reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfill.

Issues up for debate include plans to stop collecting any black sacks left alongside wheelie bins, and local councils joining forces to collect waste. Sefton already carries out some of the proposals, such as alternate weekly collection and food waste collection.

Once the Merseyside Waste Strategy has been agreed, it will be up to each local council to decide how to implement it in their area.
